Memorable persons from my early years.. and some good stories.

thomson.jpgKaren Thompson.  I was madly in love with this girl in the 3rd grade. She was runner up for the high school homecoming queen but we never actually went out ..For me, she lives forever in my mind as the archetype of feminine beauty.  grey.jpg Bobby Grey. An original favorite friend in elementary school, great athlete, he disappeared after junior high and I never knew where he went. Reminds me of my current friend Larry Lefkowitz.

luber.jpgSteve Luber.  In the 1st grade, we were in competition as "best reader".  He bears a resemblance, striking to me,  to my life long tennis adversary, and friend,   J Dickstein.

In a 7th grade class, I managed to write in pen on the back of this girl's  blouse the word "whore". ( for reasons only a psychologist could explain)   Of course I got in big trouble with the school and was suspended.  serbin.jpg

The next year I got suspended again (for reason I cannot recall), and all my teachers had to sign an office note with the story of this previous suspension.   I was mortified with each request.

However,  my math teachertpjhStratton.jpg was a sexy bombshell who liked me.  She used to poke her very large natural breasts into my head while looking over my shoulder at my papers.  (I actually thought this to be accidental and would remain would remain perfectly still.   I never imagined it might have meant something ).

When she saw the note about suspension, her response was:  " O Stephen !   tee hee hee ...... ".   An yet it never occurred to me that I may have had an opportunity of a lifetime.

groer.jpg Annie Groer. She contacted me after college and we went out.. she was a reporter for the Post.  The next time I saw here she was a panelist in one of the presidential debates.. She is here for that reason.

hawn.jpgI have no stories about this person, and we were not great friends.  She however has become a famous movie star that everyone has heard of ..  Do you know who ??

Click here when you give up.

hunt.jpg Pat Hunt. I  was madly in love with this girl's body in the 8th grade and secretly would follow her around.  After a party one night, I tried to kiss her.  She started to run away and I ran after her.  Eventually I caught her on the side of a hill and finally she submitted - and kissed me back !   A very memorable moment for me ( an no doubt for her ), but she moved away from town shortly thereafter.   maryBeth.jpgMary Beth, my girl friend in 6th grade.  We would make out in my basement and my friend Morgan would make out with his girl friend Martha Duvall.  (see below ) .

morgan.jpgRonnie Morgan,  my most important friend in the 5th and 6th grade.  He convinced me he had a flying machine and then laughed at me when I believed him.  He got me to go to Camp Silver Willows in 1957.. and I rode horses and fished all summer.. the best summer of my life ! !  He went home early from "homesickness" .

Incidentally, my "silly" belief in flying has paid off - I now own a hang glider which I use to fly with foot launch from mountains, sometimes I can fly more than one mile high using updrafts known to hang glider pilots as thermals !!   Ronnie gets well-deserved credit for rousing the belief that I could fly with a homemade gadget.

duvall.jpg Martha Duvall, friend in 6th grade.  Bad girl though, she taught me how to smoke.  She got pregnant in 11th grade and never saw her again.

corky.jpgCorky,  my all time best pal.   Many many stories I could write about ..  he was a great poker player . He would play poker with my mother and take her money.. I thought this was the funniest thing as I could never get any money out of her.   He would watch out for me.  When I was going to get married the first time, he came rushing to my house and crashed through the front door exhorting:  "Steve don't do it ! "  .   I did try to back out but was cajoled into it anyway much to my ultimate dismay..  (thanks for trying Cork)..    nells.jpgA great friend in high school.  I would go to his house and listen to him play the drums, which I loved .. his parent would always make him stop.

This photo captures most of my friends from the 8th grade in one spot, the 8th grade basketball team.. I was a starter on that team but hurt my knee in gym class and had to sit out the season..

This photo, though weak,  taken in winter 1958, captures a scene at one of the best points in my life.. My memory of those days is painfully poignant.

From this photo, I can distinctly recall these people:  Larsen, Bochek, Patterson, Morgan, Grey (eyes only), Maria, Myself. The information in this photo was not viewed by me between the years 1963 (approx) and 2008 ( 45 years ) and yet it instantly invoked an entire family of memories.

This recollection I consider a testament to the enormous storage capacity and pattern recognition capability of the human mind.. More than fifty years old, each of these countenances invoke significant amounts of stored visual and emotional data.  It is evident that my brain is using data retrieval technology currently (2009) more advanced than Google.

No doubt Google is working on some similar technology, ie, searching an image for recognizable pattern fragments.  It seems to me that that they already are using similar logic in the domain of language fragments.
