Virginia Indians - The first treaty with the English
Below is a section of the first treaty between American Indians and the English.
The treaty was executed between the colony of Virginia and the Pamaunkey tribe in 1646 and it has held through to this very day, obviously with some amendments.
By reading this treaty excerpt carefully, you will discover very much about the condition of the society at that time / and the relations with the Indians..
The cursive writing is much like what I learned in elementary school in the 1950s. I distinctly recall the activity of writing fancy capital letters as was done in this treaty. With the advent computers this writing style will probably become a lost art.
As a background, in 1622 the Indians tried to kill all the English in an co-ordinated attack orchestrated by chief Opecancanou. They managed to kill approx 400 out of 1600. They tried again in 1642 with less success but after a couple of years of serious hostilities, they came up with the treaty below. Opecancanou was revered by the Indians but hated by the whites. He was finally killed without trial by the English ca 1645 at the age of 100 years.
Opecancanou was brother of the great Powhatan, father of Pocohantas. Powahatan had established peace with the English but died ca 1616 at age 60 and his brother took over the chiefdom and only "pretended" to want peace.
Necotowance = Chief recognized as leader of the Pamaunkey after Opecancanou's assassination.
